A curious mindset
Throughout my career as a career counsellor, I have been privileged to assist thousands of people from all walks of life, backgrounds and occupations.
Career coaching/development is based on initially assessing clients and really understanding them (this is fundamental to providing good advice and career direction). The old adage that “everyone is different” is absolutely true.
“No two people are the same” is always the basis for starting work with a new client. No preconceptions, bias or judgements can be allowed to enter any stage of the client/counsellor relationship. This objectivity of the career practitioner is the foundation of the relationship that provides a safe environment for the client to learn and prosper.
There are identifiable factors that differentiate people and contribute to the success of their career transition and I have written on these topics in previous publications: PERSISTENCE, RESILIENCE and ACTION.
Let us examine CURIOSITY.
We live in an age of abundance and opportunity, surrounded by multiple options…too much choice for some people.
The information age has given us the ability to quickly source data and statistics on which to base our choices. So why do some people struggle to prosper in such a fertile environment?
In my observation, they often lack curiosity which I define as “inquisitive thinking such as exploration, investigation and learning”.
Age and gender have nothing to do with curiosity…a closed mind in a 25-year-old is as equally limiting as in a 75-year-old. Studies on neuroplasticity consistently confirm that a healthy brain in any age group is capable of learning new and complex tasks.
It’s a mindset…nothing to do with reality.
So what is the common denominator (out of the thousands of clients previously noted) that enables most people to achieve a positive career transition?
…A CURIOUS MINDSET!
