Career advancement
Advancing your career is predicated on management noticing your potential and current value to the organisation.
The value that you develop is an asset to your employer who will recognise that unless they provide you with promotions and salary increases you are likely to be “snapped up” by a competitor, or simply leave for better opportunities.
So how do you actively promote yourself professionally?
- Speak up…contribute directly at meetings or other gatherings
- Point out your achievements so that managers understand your valued-contribution
- Don’t be shy in promoting your achievements and efforts etc.
- Continually do relevant courses and gain extra qualifications (ask the company for a co-contribution to your fees and even if they refuse it is then known that you are studying)
- Go that “extra mile” in your daily job functions…always do more than required
- Accept praise and awards for work that you have done well, do not let anyone else take the kudos for your achievements
- Network closely with work colleagues and always attend work and after-hours functions or informal gatherings
- Be pro-active with new ideas that enhance your department or company's cost control, systems, services, products and other improvements that you can identify
- Be a team player, but never play down your personal contribution and ensure that your manager is well aware of your actions and worth to the organisation
It’s your career! If you don’t DRIVE it no one else will.
