Career counsellor
Career counsellors can be found across many sectors including private consulting, education, government and business. They often have different titles which can be confusing to the average person, and certainly is not indicative of their individual level of expertise.
You may be wondering if there is any distinction between these titles, or which is the best to use.
There is really no rule about this; several titles are commonly applied and are equally acceptable. “Career Consultant”, "Career Practitioner" and “Careers Officer” are also quite common. These titles do not represent different kinds or levels of service, so you can use whichever title you prefer unless the organisation you work for has some official designation for the job. In the case of a school teacher who is involved in careers education but does not undertake one-to-one career counselling, “Careers Teacher” seems the most appropriate title.
Some practitioners, such as Human Resource Officers, may carry out many of the same activities as others involved with career development work, but their positions presuppose a primary responsibility to the company or organisation which employs them, rather than to the job applicant as an individual.
Nevertheless, Career Development professionals in personalised one-to-one career guidance work are careful to protect the interests of employees (job applicants), and realise that careful matching of individual and job serves the best interests of both the organisation and the employee.
It needs to be noted that not all Career Practitioners are the same and that all have identical skill levels...some only work in the initial assessment, others in resume writing and professional companies that provide a total service through to Executive Coaching.
ACMA creates successful career paths through detailed individual assessment, research and job market analysis, combined with expert personalised coaching.
Note: A Career Development Association of Australia research paper found that when professional career guidance occurred that the participant was 2.67 times more likely to secure a job.
