Online dating is very similar to job searching and with the advent of the internet it has become very easy to "check out" a person...so why not a potential employer.
An employment contract is based on mutual needs, trust and alignment of values...very similar to a marriage.
So the question is - "would you get married without really knowing your partner"? Certainly not it's too risky. Well, it is very similar to not investigating a potential employer...you have a lot to lose (think carefully before damaging your personal brand).
Whether you are applying for a job or going to an interview it makes sense to discover as much as you can about the company, including its management style, market standing, product range and values. Not only does this enhance your ability to discuss the company in an interview situation, it may also uncover information that would make you think twice about working for them.
Prior to an employment contract being entered into it is incumbent on all parties to ask the hard questions of each other, and hopefully eradicate a poor decision that may be regretted later.
Research the company's website using LinkedIn, Google, Twitter, Google Plus as well as your own connections. There is a lot of information out there now so your chances of discovering both good and bad intelligence are high.
