Key selection criteria & Capability statement responses
ACMA has developed methods to assist people in systematically writing focused key selection criteria or capability statement responses in accordance with strict public sector job application protocols.
Most Federal, State and Local Government bodies, plus other government-funded institutions and like organisations require three components to a position application – application letter, detailed resume/CV and written response to each key selection criteria (KSC) or capability statement as set out in the position description.
If you are not prepared to go to this level of detail then do not apply – you are simply wasting your time.
There are four broad areas that could affect how the quality of your response will be viewed:
- The contextual relevance of the situation;
- The complexity of the task;
- The process used in the action taken; and
- Outcomes achieved from the action.
The life of a public sector application will "live or die" on the standard of the response to the key selection criteria or capability statement.
In other words, the best candidate with a poor key KSC or capability statement response probably won't get an interview (or obviously the job).
Many high-quality candidates miss out on public sector positions simply because their KSC or capability statement response was deficient.
ACMA creates successful career paths through detailed individual assessment, research and job market analysis, combined with expert personalised coaching.
Note: A Career Development Association of Australia research paper found that when professional career guidance occurred that the participant was 2.67 times more likely to secure a job.
