The theory of FLOW in careers

The theory of FLOW in careers

Throughout my time as a career counsellor, it has been my privilege to assist many people to move from a state of career confusion or chaos to calm and objective job seekers and finally into satisfying career paths.

Whilst everyone is different the key objective of a career coach is to focus a client on what they can realistically achieve in the workforce.  There are common denominators that can be tracked and applied to most people to gently guide them into a more structured approach to their career aspirations.

It is similar to a large storm that has wreaked havoc on a neighbourhood, with the first action being to CLEAN UP the mess, and only then can you start to rebuild.

The objective is to help clients through the mess and then to provide a solid structure for their immediate and long-term career development.

Providing a support base and clear direction enables clients to recover their confidence and sense of self-worth (built on the above-mentioned structure).

This is where it gets interesting as I have repeatedly observed in most people that given the right support and again structure, they begin to FLOW.

By flow, I mean that without undue stress and overthinking their situation they effortlessly start making decisions and initiating actions for themselves.

At this point as a career professional, I step back and let them take the responsibility for their career decisions and achievements (whilst constantly monitoring their actions and providing technical advice).

Once a person reaches this state of FLOW good things start to occur and they simply FLOW.

The theory is this:

“If given the right support and structure people will effectively manage their lives and reach their personal potential".

As a career counsellor observing a client in a state of FLOW is extremely rewarding for both the career coach and client.
