Understanding your value to the market
Everyone has a value...many people cannot identify it!
One of the most misunderstood elements of the employment market is a person’s potential value to an employer. That’s right VALUE!
Take out the emotion, your education and your personality and what is left is your “value to the market”.
Employers (both private and public sectors) do not employ people out of social duty…it occurs simply because they need a job done as efficiently as possible.
Whilst the workplace often becomes a hub of social activity and connections entwined in people’s lives and sense of self-worth, workers will quickly be retrenched if the employer no longer needs the job is done (you are no longer of value to the employer).
Identifying your core value, nurturing and growing it is the key to a consistent long term career (a career is not necessarily a single job and may well be many jobs over a life span).
The successful 21stCentury worker is now a tech-savvy individual who can work remotely, alone and in teams. Emotionally intelligent and flexible, with an entrepreneurial element all add value any person’s employability.
Can value be measured or is it subjective?
Probably both…
Past workplace performance can be a powerful indicator (hence behavioural interviews), however when endeavouring to convince a new employer it often comes down to the expectation you can create of your future contribution.
Consequently, a strong “value to the market” statement can be a critical tool.
Example:
“I am an innovator and creator of solutions. Over the last 15 years, I have a proven background in identifying customer needs and developing technology-based products from initial concept, product research and design through to final delivery and installation.
I can manage complex technical projects from design and testing through to sale and supply.”
